Surgical Sperm Retrievals

Surgical Sperm Retrievals at Nex IVF: TESA, TESE, and PESA

Surgical sperm retrievals procedures including TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration), TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) and PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) would be an option for men with azoospermia (lack of sperm in ejaculate), and can assist these men to become fertile. We also offer these more advanced techniques at Nex IVF to allow men with severe male infertility to conceive through Assisted Reproductive technologies such as IVF and ICSI, by retrieving viable sperm directly from the testicles or epididymis.

  1. Testicular Sperm Aspiration TESA
TESA is a procedure whereby sperm is extracted from the testicular tissue using a fine needle, in the minimally invasive form. It is usually done under local anesthesia and is best for men with obstructive azoospermia who have sperm made in the testicles which can’t make it to the ejaculate due to blockages. Nonetheless, as with obstructive azoospermia, TESA is also effective for men with non-obstructive azoospermia, in which sperm production is blocked.
  2. Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE)
A small surgical incision for the testicles is made in TESE to extract sperm from the testicular tissue. The form is particularly useful in men with non-obstructive azoospermia (sperm production extremely low). In TESE, a small amount of testicular tissue is removed, any viable sperm is utilized in fertilization. In most cases it is performed under local or general anesthesia, and is very effective in retrieving sperm in a difficult case.
  3. Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA)
The technique is called PESA which is minimally invasive a technique where sperm aspirated from the epididymis (the tube to which sperm has been stored once after being created in the testicles). Men who present with obstructive azoospermia due to vasectomy, congenital absence of the vas deferens, or scarring will find PESA particularlly useful. It is a fast procedure, performed under local anesthesia, and there is a quick recovery.
